If you can't delete a Record with all fields containing question marks - and you usually can't - make a Clone of the original file and Import the data from the original file, table by table. This problem almost never appears though. The original data is rescued although it now has a new Record ID. If a Record (that would otherwise be lost) can be shown through a Find or Go to Related Record, Export it to a new table or file, delete it in the original table, and then re-Import it (auto-enter option off!). This index is rebuilt with every new Find and hence never an issue. This makes sure all indexes are being rebuilt and are up-to-date. Make a Clone of the original file and Import the data from the original file, table by table. Please note: simply updating FileMaker Pro does not cure any pre-existing index flaws. How do I know there is an index problem with my file? Depending on the Index Type there are different symptoms indicating a flaw.Īfter Show all Records, a Record entered earlier is not shown or all fields appear as a question-mark.Ī Portal or a Go to Related Record either shows more than or less than the expected number of matching records, or all Fields of one Record appear as question-marks.Īfter a Find either more than or less than the expected number of records containing the searched Word are shown, or all Fields of one Record appear as question-marks.ĭepending on the Index Type there are different methods to salvage the index - if at all possible.īefore any further action, make sure to use FileMaker Pro 9.0v3 or later, which fixes a bug that might make FileMaker Pro under specific conditions "forget" to reset an index bit and hence such non-existent Records show up with question-marks in all fields. So what problems can arise, how are they recognized, and possibly cured?Īs we have seen, a single bit can make a big difference for the functionality of a file. There are many kinds of indexes: Index Typeīits representing the Record IDs in a Base Table of So for example, in a Base Table, every new Record sets exactly one bit at the position corresponding to its ID. This index is used to Find all records in a table that (for example) contain specific words (or parts thereof) within a field.Īn index is stored as one bit per corresponding Record ID. Using numeric indexes (containing no spaces or other characters) is therefor very space efficient. Numeric fields - these include date, time, time stamp, and number fields - use up to 400 digits for the value index. The remaining characters and words are ignored. In a text field, the first 100 characters of each text line - regardless of being spaces or "real" characters - are taken as the key entry. This index is needed only for Relationships. So what exactly is a Value and a Word Index? The meaningless "Minimal" would be better substituted by "Value Index" and "All" by "Value and Word Index". For number, date, time, and timestamp fields, as well as calculation fields returning results of these types, All creates an index of a field's values. Prevent FileMaker Pro from indexing the field.Ĭreate a value index of a text field’s contents or a calculation field returning text results.Ĭreates both word and value indexes for text fields or calculation fields returning text results. While None seems clear (no index exists) this does not mean, you can't search in this Field - it just takes significantly longer, since the search field of every record has to be compared to the search criteria.īy contrast the options "Minimal" and "All" are not clearly explained in the FileMaker Help (quote): In the Options for a Field the user can choose between an Indexing of None, Minimal, and All. However, it's my view that there are dozens of books written about these subjects already books that haven't needed to sex the discussion up with a horde of shambling undead. Since all the classic storytelling elements are dispensed with, we're basically left with the author's views on our current world, particularly and naturally, the wars and our culture(s). The difference is, of course, that they were real events that happened to real people. WW2 Holocaust survivors' accounts, for example, can take your breath away. One other minor point: For me, accounts of survival when the victims are real have meaning that allows them to transcend the limitations described above. It seems to me like an extraordinarily easy (maybe even lazy) way to tell a story. Basically, then, the story devolves into an excercise in basic exposition: "And then this happened, and then that happened." And so the author is free to weave his story without any pesky things like character development, story arcs, plotting, and personal details that are shown and not told. As in, past tense, as in we are left with their impressions of things that happened to them. The primary draw-the zombie war and how humanity survived-is such a compelling hook, but it's the people who survived. This is a minor gripe, though, and one that can be lived with.Ī more serious complaint, however, is that this book can be seen as completely lacking any and all dramatic tension that a person (or, me) expects from a survival horror-themed story. Q and A is inherently dry, no matter how exciting the events described are intended to be. Also, the more journalistic/interview approach to constructing the narrative limits how much color the author can impart on any given character. Of course this is partly to do with the fact that the voices all originate from the mind of one individual, the author. Firstly, most of the characters had the same-or similar-voice. There are two issues that killed it for me. (I'm going to write this review under the assumption that the reader has some inkling about the story and how it's constructed.) Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations and I struggled to finish it. This book was initially recommended to me by several people in the office and since I love zombies and apocalyptic themes, well, I was pretty excited. Note: Some of the numerical and factual material contained in this edition was previously published under the auspices of the United Nations Postwar Commission. Brooks says in his introduction, "By excluding the human factor, aren't we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn't the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as 'the living dead'?" Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. The sense of a large battle taking place was in full effect, as ships on my side engaged in dogfights while I tried my best to keep hordes of enemy ships in my line of fire. The mission’s storyline involved coming to the aid of a destroyed Earth base in the midst of a massive civil war between colonists possessing a powerful technology and those still remaining patriotic to the planet. Gamepads and joysticks are also supported, though I stuck with the typical PC controls. This helped me get a feel for the basic controls, which are generally mouse and keyboard controls with a few adjustments relating to boosting and extra movement in the Strike Suit. In the first mission we previewed, the first large-scale battle took place against a great deal of smaller ships. Even with a pre-beta build that we had a chance to play, the combat was both challenging and engaging. However, I would definitely urge you not to be disappointed by this news, as the primary transforming mech suit more than makes up for it with its incredible versatility in space warfare. This may be a bit misleading, as I was informed by the developers that Strike Suit Zero only takes place hovering thousands of miles above any sort of solid ground, if anywhere near it at all. You may have seen the trailers for Strike Suit Zero floating around here and elsewhere on the Internet, and the glimpse of giant mechs may have gotten your mind to imagining some heavy duty ground combat sections. In both of these missions, I had a chance to really get a feel for the Strike Suit that the game is named for a transforming ship that doubles as a massive mech suit. Taking place in various reaches of space, Strike Suit Zero sports an excellent soundtrack by Paul Ruskay of Homeworld fame and an objective-based mission structure that will deeply affect the final outcome of the game.ĭuring my extensive hands-on time, I had a chance to check out two huge missions that involved several dogfights and a few tough battles against huge frigates and other large ships. With their new PC venture Strike Suit Zero, the company is poised to do exactly that.
